Keys on a keyring.

A key is an instrument, usually metallic and with ridges, that give it compatibility with a specific lock. Keys grant the holder access to devices requiring them, such as doors with locks, certain chests, and automobiles. Keys can be kept on keyrings, which can be easily added to or removed from a carabiner.

A modern variation of the key is the keycard, a plastic card with a magnetic strip which can be used to open certain doors.
