A mint tin kit is a specialized kit fitted into a tin which previously housed mints (often Altoids brand, though other brands of mint packaged in tins are used).
Appeal[]
Mint tin kits are appealing for several reasons: there is a D.I.Y. quality to assembling a kit, there is fun and challenge in fitting as much as one can into a small space, and the kits may serve practical application once completed. A completed mint tin kit also takes up very little room.
Because a mint tin kit can be initially mistaken for a tin of mints, it won't particularly stand out to thieves.
Types of mint tin kit[]
There are several varieties of mint tin kit, among the kinds that have been made:
- First aid kits
- Fishing kits
- Cell phone chargers
- Soldering fume extractors
- Containers for other foods and beverages
- Electronics kits
- Urban survival kits (a.k.a. MacGyver kits)
- Wilderness survival kits
- Fire starting kits
- Candles
- Portable games chests
So popular are mint tin kits, that the company Adafruit has produced an Arduino-compatible device measured specifically to fit in a mint tin (they also provide a package that bundles the device and a mint tin of appropriate dimensions together).
